Day 1
Day 1 in Cherrapunji
Kick off your Cherrapunji adventure with its most iconic sights—lush waterfalls, living root bridges, and breathtaking viewpoints. Today is all about soaking in the natural beauty that makes this place legendary.
Activities
Visit Nohkalikai Falls
Start with the tallest plunge waterfall in India, Nohkalikai Falls. The sight of water cascading down 1,115 feet into a turquoise pool is mesmerizing. There’s a viewpoint with a small entry fee, and early mornings offer the best light for photos with fewer crowds.
- Wear sturdy shoes—the path can be slippery.
- Local vendors sell fresh pineapples—try some!
Explore Double Decker Living Root Bridge
Head to Nongriat village for the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge, a marvel of bioengineering by the Khasi tribe. The trek takes about 1.5 hours each way, passing through dense forests and small waterfalls. The bridge itself is surreal—two layers of tangled roots spanning a river.
- Carry water and snacks—no shops on the trail.
- Hire a local guide (around INR 500) for fascinating stories.
Sunset at Mawsmai Cave
Wrap up the day at Mawsmai Cave, one of the few lit limestone caves in Meghalaya. Wander through narrow passages with dramatic stalactites and stalagmites. The cave exit opens to a viewpoint perfect for sunset over the Bangladesh plains.
- The cave can be claustrophobic—skip if uneasy in tight spaces.
- Flashlights aren’t needed but grip shoes help.

Day 2
Day 2 in Cherrapunji
A mix of stunning natural wonders and local culture, with waterfalls, viewpoints, and a taste of Khasi life.
Activities
Trek to Wei Sawdong Falls
A lesser-known but breathtaking three-tiered waterfall tucked in the jungle. The trek is moderate, taking you through lush greenery and small streams. The turquoise pools at the base are perfect for a quick dip if you're feeling adventurous.
- Wear sturdy shoes—the trail can be slippery.
- Carry water and snacks—no stalls nearby.
Visit Seven Sisters Falls Viewpoint
One of Cherrapunji’s most iconic sights, especially in the monsoon when the seven segments of the falls are in full flow. The viewpoint offers a panoramic vista of the cascades plunging down the cliffs. It’s a short walk from the parking area, making it accessible for everyone.
- Visit during/after rains for the fullest falls.
- Binoculars help spot the distant segments.
Explore Local Khasi Village (Nongriat or Mawlynnong)
Spend the afternoon in a nearby Khasi village. Mawlynnong (Asia’s cleanest village) is a bit farther but worth it for its bamboo bridges and treehouses. Nongriat is closer and offers a glimpse of daily life near the root bridges. Try betel nut with locals or watch traditional weaving.
- Ask before photographing villagers.
- Try the local smoked pork if offered.
