Srinagar is more than just houseboats and shikara rides. If you're up for some action, this itinerary packs in the best outdoor experiences the valley has to offer - from trekking through pine forests to whitewater rafting in the Lidder River. I've done all these activities multiple times and can vouch for the adrenaline rush they deliver.

Day 1
Day 1 in Srinagar
Kick off your Srinagar trip with its most iconic sights—a serene shikara ride on Dal Lake, a stroll through Mughal gardens, and a peek into local life at a bustling market.
Activities
Shikara Ride on Dal Lake
Start your morning gliding across the mirror-like waters of Dal Lake in a traditional shikara. These colorful wooden boats are like gondolas but with Kashmiri charm. You'll pass floating gardens, houseboats, and maybe even a vendor selling kahwa (saffron tea) from his boat. Early mornings are magical when the mist lifts off the water.
- Bargain politely—rates are flexible
- Carry cash—most shikara walas don’t accept digital payments
Visit Nishat Bagh
Head to the 'Garden of Bliss,' one of Kashmir’s grandest Mughal gardens. Terraced lawns, cascading fountains, and panoramic views of the lake make this a photographer’s paradise. The symmetry and Chinar trees (turning fiery red in autumn) are highlights.
- Wear comfy shoes—there are many steps to climb
- Visit the small tea stall near the entrance for fresh samosas
Explore Lal Chowk & Old City Markets
Dive into Srinagar’s chaotic heart. Lal Chowk is the commercial hub, but wander into adjacent alleys for spice stalls, papier-mâché workshops, and bakeries selling fresh sheermal (saffron bread). Don’t miss Koker Bazaar for authentic Kashmiri shawls—vendors will happily explain the difference between pashmina and raffal.
- Try 'noon chai' (pink salted tea) at any local stall
- Carry small change—many small shops don’t give change for large notes

Day 2
Day 2 in Srinagar
A mix of iconic sights and local flavors, from Mughal gardens to vibrant markets and cozy cafes.
Activities
Shalimar Bagh & Chashme Shahi
Start your day with the serene beauty of Shalimar Bagh, the largest Mughal garden in Srinagar, built by Emperor Jahangir. The terraced lawns, fountains, and chinar trees make it a perfect morning stroll. Then head to Chashme Shahi, the smallest but most charming of the Mughal gardens, known for its natural spring and panoramic views of Dal Lake.
- Wear comfortable shoes for walking on terraced paths
- Carry a water bottle—Chashme Shahi has drinkable spring water
Hazratbal Shrine & Dargah
Visit the iconic Hazratbal Shrine, the only domed mosque in Srinagar, sitting gracefully on the northern shores of Dal Lake. It houses a relic believed to be a hair of Prophet Muhammad. The white marble structure reflects beautifully on the lake, especially in the afternoon light. The surrounding area has a peaceful vibe, with locals often offering prayers or just sitting by the water.
- Dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees)
- Photography inside the shrine is not allowed
Evening at Badamwari & Khayam Chowk
Wrap up your day at Badamwari, a lesser-known almond garden that comes alive in the evening with locals enjoying picnics and sunsets. Then, head to Khayam Chowk, a bustling market area where you can sip on kahwa (Kashmiri saffron tea) at a local cafe and browse for handmade papier-mâché items or pashmina shawls.
- Try the almond cakes sold by street vendors in Badamwari
- Bargain politely at Khayam Chowk—start at half the quoted price

Day 3
Day 3 in Srinagar
A slower-paced day to soak in Srinagar's hidden gems, from historic gardens to local crafts and flavors.
Activities
Morning at Pari Mahal & Cheshma Shahi Springs
Start your day at Pari Mahal, the 'Palace of Fairies,' a stunning terraced garden with Persian influences and panoramic views of Dal Lake. Walk down to Cheshma Shahi Springs nearby, a lesser-known but serene spot with natural springs and quiet pathways. The early light makes the stone arches and water channels glow.
- Wear comfortable shoes for the terraced steps
- Carry a water bottle—the climb can be warm
Explore Jamia Masjid & Nearby Craft Shops
Head to the 14th-century Jamia Masjid, one of Kashmir's most important mosques, with its striking wooden architecture and peaceful courtyard. Afterward, wander the surrounding lanes for tiny shops selling papier-mâché, pashmina, and walnut wood carvings. Stop by Sufi Book House for rare books on Kashmiri culture.
- Dress modestly for the mosque
- Bargain gently at craft shops—start at 50% of quoted price
Sunset at Nigeen Lake with Local Wazwan Dinner
Skip the crowded Dal Lake and head to quieter Nigeen Lake for an evening shikara ride. Many boatmen here offer shorter, more intimate rides. Cap the day with a Wazwan feast at Ahdoos or Mughal Darbar—try the rogan josh, yakhni, and gushtaba (meatballs in yogurt gravy), a Kashmiri specialty.
- Ask for 'saffron kahwa' after dinner—it aids digestion
- Book shikara in advance during peak season
